Too often, he would see sloshed students get poured through the pneumatic doors drunk – beyond drunk, actually, more like poisoned by alcohol. That anecdote springs to Offerman’s mind because, with New Year’s Eve beckoning, emergency rooms figure to be brimming with celebrators of any age who have imbibed too much, some to the point that the bingeing could lead to organ failure and even death. That’s what happens with the tragic cases of these college kids who go out and drink a lot; they can literally come in and die from alcohol poisoning. The National Center for Health Statistics, part of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, does not provide figures for alcohol poisoning deaths per year. But in July, the Associated Press isolated a cause-of-death database at the NCHS and determined that 157 people, ages 18 to 23, died of alcohol poisoning in 1999 through 2005.
