Weight Loss News - Gunner recovering slowly from accident (The Sentinel)

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

He had chased a rabbit into the road and the truck couldn’t stop fast enough, said Natasha Haulman, owner of Kindred Spirit Kennels. Haulman, who adopted the dog out from her rescue kennel when he was six months old, spent four days with the help of friends trying to find an orthopedic surgeon to repair the 90-pound animal’s injury. Marcia Potts, a volunteer at Kindred Spirit Kennels, and kennel owner Natasha Haulman attach a cone collar to Gunner to protect him during his recovery. Any animal adopted out comes back to the kennel for any reason the owner can’t take care of it, Haulman said, adding she doesn’t believe in killing animals. Collection jars have been put out in the last week to collect donations at local businesses, including Red Door Antiques in Carlisle and Green Mountain General Merchandise in Gardners. read more

Researchers have created new possibilities for the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), having coaxed embryonic mouse stem cells to grow into healthy muscle tissue. Duchenne muscular dystrophy ( DMD ) is a form of muscular dystrophy that is characterized by decreasing muscle mass and progressive loss of muscle function in male children. The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center team focused on developing embryonic stem cells containing the gene Pax3, which triggers cells to grow into muscle tissue that will produce dystrophin. These two steps combined resulted in a cell population capable of making muscle in a mouse with muscular dystrophy and, very importantly, the new muscle is stronger. This is one of the few studies to test the ability of embryonic stem cells to grow in adult muscle tissue, the researchers added. read more
