A NEW Australian study debunking the myth that cigarettes keep weight down is a further warning about the dangers of smoking, an anti-smoking body says. The study, by a team from the University of NSW and the University of Melbourne, found people do not lose fat because they smoke. The research found smokers lost muscle mass, which made them look thinner, but the fat instead was stored around vital organs. Quit executive director Fiona Sharkie said yesterday fat would tend to gather around a smoker’s waist and torso, adding to the adverse effects on their health. Since quitting smoking 8 months ago, I have gone up 2 dress sizes (from 10 to 14) and I don't eat any differently so this study seems incorrect to me. I am an ex smoker and I know it's not the smoking which keeps you slim it's the fact that smokers knock back offers of cake and biscuits because they prefer a cigarette with their coffee. read more

The study debunks the myth that cigarettes keep weight down, says an Australian research team from the University of New South Wales and the University of Melbourne. Half the mice were exposed to smoke from four cigarettes a day for six days a week, while the other half were smoke free. The study found smokers lost muscle mass, which gave them the appearance of being thinner, but the fat instead was stored around their vital organs.
