A CASTLETON gym owner is looking to prove that size is everything after reaching the final of body building’s pinnacle event, Mr Olympia, in Las Vegas next month. John Hodgson, who runs the Evolution Gym at Blue Pit Mill, has spent nearly two decades striving to reach the top of his sport but found his diminutive 5ft 4inch frame a sizeable obstacle in a discipline which celebrates huge muscle mass. John, aged 40, had even considered giving up on his dream of emulating previous winners, such as California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger – who rose to fame, alongside side the Incredible Hulk star Lou Ferrigno, in the 1977 film Pumping Iron, based around the Mr Olympia contest. And following his recent second place finish at the Tampa Bay Pro Championship in America – where he was beaten by current champion in 202 pound division David Henry – John will get his to fulfil his greatest ambition and compete at Mr Olympia. Nicknamed “Mr Condition”, John won his first British title in 1993 but has, until the introduction of the new weight category, failed to impress the judges on the international stage. John is now training four times a week ahead of the event at the Las Vegas Convention Centre on September 26. read more
