James McClain, a cancer prevention fellow at the National Cancer Institute found that, “Greater participation in physical activity has consistently been associated with reduced risk of cancer incidence at several sites, including breast and colon cancers. Previously, the general thought was that cancer survivors needed rest to combat the endurance and energy loss associated with cancer treatment. However, according to Robin Budnetz, a personal trainer and group fitness instructor at the Central Queens YM & YWHA in Forest Hills, “cancer treatment is on the brink of a new trend, which includes increased physical activity. Budnetz herself, a long time athlete and dancer — trained by Joseph Pilates — was first diagnosed with stage 3 (out of 4) inflammatory breast cancer in 1996. Armed with personal experience and professional training from the Cancer Exercise Institute, Budnetz will be piloting a new cancer exercise class at the Forest Hills YM & YWHA, beginning Wednesday, July 1st. read more
