Yes, Leisel Jones and Libby Lenton made it a great night for host Australia but at the end of the sixth session of finals, the headline and the footnote were once more about the United States and the fast-forward to the future. The US now stands head, shoulders and belly buttons above the rest of the world, with 10 world records and 13 titles among 23 medals. Australia, meantime, looked to Jones and Lenton to provide the home-crowd thrills. Balfour, Kendrick and South Africa’s Suzaan Van Biljon were the only three who refused to wobble and on the way home it was hard to separate the battle for the minor medals until the American nudged a stroke ahead 15 metres from the wall. But she looked terribly sad, not because her first ever individual world championship final had ended in a very credible bronze – but because she felt unwelcome.
