Topic: Weight Loss News – A diamond in the rough (San Mateo County Times)

That’s the initial response people have when they first set foot in the Riekes Center for Human Enhancement, said founder and director Gary Riekes. Tucked into a light industrial section of unincorporated San Mateo County bordering the North Fair Oaks neighborhood and Menlo Park at 3455 Edison Way, the community center, which attracts about 3,000 people annually and offers lessons in fitness, arts and nature studies, looks more like a warehouse than a treasure trove of personal development for teens. Starting in August, the center also will offer a free after-school program for low-income youths, focused on fitness, nutrition and overall health. The center recently received a $95,000 grant from the Sequoia Healthcare District that will fund the pilot program for a year. Although the levels of membership aren’t cheap, they start about $160 per month, which includes three training sessions per week, the center assists about a quarter of its members with scholarships.
