Using a machine called the Eccentron, diabetics enrolled in the study will do a kind of exercise called RENEW - short for resistance exercise via negative eccentric work - during two to three 30-minutes sessions a week for three months. This “negative eccentric” work allows the external force on the muscle to exceed the force the muscle can generate, forcing the muscle to lengthen.
