Training for this marathon has been the most-purposeful exercise I have ever undertaken, and the first that has changed my body in ways I didn’t want. My chest has shrunk from 41 to 38 inches in six months, and my arms from 14 to 12 inches. I no longer fill all those tight shirts I purposely bought and spend ‘casual’ time in hoodies these days. My upper body muscle mass remained while thigh and calf muscle grew over the first few months and my weight rose from 11′7 to over 12st. While training 20 miles or five runs a week for the 2005 Marathon I had eight hours sleep, perfect, every night but now, with tougher training, longer and more purposeful runs, I take naps whenever possible and waste my days off sleeping in until midday. read more
